The problem

Mainframes and midrange applications remain an integral part of many organisations’ technology stacks, especially in the banking, finance, insurance and superannuation industries that use these systems to administer product and policy information.

Modern automation tools and techniques largely focus on Web, API and mobile technologies.

Open-source options are dated and decayed and are not well supported or maintained by the community.

While automation of mainframe test cases offers a positive return on investment, it is reliant on dated commercial technology that is expensive, difficult to use, and does not align well with modern agile development and DevOps principles.

How we solved it

Our team updated open-source libraries to support automated interaction with both mainframe and mid-range applications.

We paired updated libraries with modern open-source automation frameworks such as RobotFramework, TestNG, and xUnit for test development.

The solution was paired with Docker and cloud-based technologies to enable parallel execution in a CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery/deployment) environment, which permits the rapid execution of a high number of automated mainframe/mid-range test cases.

The results

We developed frameworks using a methodology that allows the client to use a significant portion of our common code to easily develop additional test cases.

We provided staff training to enable the client to contribute to test case development and maintenance and ultimately take over responsibility for execution.

The client is now completely self-sufficient but often re-engages Sonar Consulting to manage work overflow or implement new advanced features.
